Samsung K Zoom. Has Samsung got it right this time ?

Samsung has launched the new Samsung Galaxy K Zoom – a 20.7 MP camera smartphone with 10x optical zoom lens, Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) , and a brighter light Xenon Flash. It is the second camera smartphone from Samsung after the last year’s Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom . It sports a large 4.8-inch HD display and is powered by a hexa (6) core processor .
Its design (other than the zoom lens) looks almost similar to the newly launched Samsung’s flagship smartphone - Samsung Galaxy S5 , with similar back panel design and same colors . But instead of naming it Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom , Samsung has named it Samsung Galaxy K Zoom (K for C(K)amera?) .

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom key features :
  • 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display
  • 20.7 MP camera , 10x optical zoom , OIS , Xenon Flash
  • Hexa core processor (Quad core + Dual core) , 2GB RAM
  • Android Kitkat v4.4 OS
  • Camera features – AF/AE Separation (balance light and clarity), Object tracking , Selfie Alarm (timer for selfie)
  • 3G , NFC connectivity (4G LTE depending upon region , most probably not in India)
  • White, Charcoal black , and Electric blue colors
  • Ultra Power Saving Mode , Kids mode  , S Health Lite

The biggest difference between K Zoom and earlier Galaxy cameras is the design. K Zoom is surprisingly light for what it offers. It weighs just 200 grams and that makes a big difference in how well it feels in hands. At 20mm, it is also quite slim. While it was possible to carry earlier Galaxy cameras into pocket, K Zoom is the first device in the series that we feel would easily slip into the pocket, almost like a phablet.

Earlier Galaxy cameras were awkward to use as smartphones. The lens bulge was too big on them. But K Zoom can be used as a smartphone without too many compromises. The lens bulge in the device is surprisingly flat compared to what earlier Galaxy cameras had. Samsung claims that in K Zoom it is using a different (and unique) lens that retracts to form a very compact module.

Sardar Sarovar Dam - One day picnic spot

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a gravity dam on the Narmada River near Navagam, Gujarat in India. It is the largest dam and part of the Narmada Valley Project, a large hydraulic engineering project involving the construction of a series of large irrigation andhydroelectric multi-purpose dams on the Narmada River. The project took form in 1979 as part of a development scheme to increase irrigation and produce hydroelectricity.

You can book a guided tour which will take you through six points around the dam site: a garden; the foundational stone laid by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1961; a site with a side view of the flow of the water from the dam; a lake where boating takes place; the first lock gate of the main canal; a trekking site with a nature education camp for students. Near the site is also the Surpaneshwar Shiva temple that the Government had built to replace the original ancient temple that was submerged by the dam. At the foot of the dam is the Kevadia colony, where the employees of the dam live and where there are also places for visitors to stay.

Every monsoon after about a month of good rain which generally happens in the month of July, the river Narmada flows at its peak and the dam overflows. This is the sight to see - the dam overflowing - the air is filled with mist and the view from the first point is breathtaking. view point no. 2 - you can get a birds eye view of the dam but you need to climb up the hill. Further down as you drive along the canal you come across a place where you can park and sit down and enjoy the breeze.

In terms of the volume of concrete involved for gravity dams, this dam will be ranking as the second largest in the world with an aggregate volume of 6.82 million cu.m. The first is Grand Coule Dam in USA with a total volume of 8.0 million cu.m. This dam with its spillway discharging capacity of 85,000 cumecs (30 lakh cusec), will be the third in the world, Gazenba (1.13 lac cumecs) in China and Tucurri (1.0 lac cumecs) in Brazil being the first two.

The Reservoir:

Kerala Backwaters #Pristine#

The Kerala backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) of Kerala state in southern India. The network includes five large lakes linked by canals, both manmade and natural, fed by 38 rivers, and extending virtually half the length of Kerala state. The backwaters were formed by the action of waves and shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats range.
The Kerala Backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways, and sometimes compared to the American Bayou. In the midst of this landscape there are a number of towns and cities, which serve as the starting and end points of backwater cruises. National Waterway No. 3 from Kollam to Kottapuram, covers a distance of 205 km and runs almost parallel to the coast line of southern Kerala facilitating both cargo movement and backwater tourism.
The backwaters have a unique ecosystem - freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from the Arabian Sea. In certain areas, such as the Vembanad Kayal, where a barrage has been built near Kumarakom, salt water from the sea is prevented from entering the deep inside, keeping the fresh water intact. Such fresh water is extensively used for irrigation purposes.

The best time to visit Kerala is during winter (cool) season, between October and February. Also this is the peak tourist season of the state.

Most of my visit to Kerala is during this season. In winter, the temperature drops a bit but the weather is never too chilly.
The weather, at this time is at its mild, to enjoy yourself on beaches. This is also a good time to see some of the more interesting colorful festivals.
Plan early and block hotels in advance - and be ready to expect crowds and to shell out premium amounts for accommodation, backwaters, nights out, and other events.
